Given Vincent’s concern for those in slavery the current Issue of National Geographic (August 2003) has a powerful photographic essay . There are more slaves today (27 million) than were seized from Africa in four centuries of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The modern commerce in humans rivals illegal drug trafficking in its global reach—and in the destruction of lives. (Excerpts and photos available online.)The article is not about people living Like slave, working hard for lousy pay. Not people 200 years ago. It’s about 27 million people worldwide who are bought and sold, held captive, brutalized, exploited for profit. “Trafficking” is but the tip of the iceberg since most slaves never leave their countries.
The online line version has some fine interactive material and links to other resources giving a fuller picture of slavery than most people people are aware of.
