In recognition of the 170th anniversary of the founding of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, we are asking everyone to pause for a moment of silence at 10 a.m. on April 23 to be mindful of the plight of the poor throughout the world. It was April 23, 1833 when a group of college students in Paris, France, decided to organize themselves to address poverty in their own neighborhoods. Today, the active international relief organization has close to one million members in more than 130 countries.
Locally, the St. Vincent de Paul Society conducts a variety of programs designed to aid the needy of the county. Approximately 1,000 volunteers served more than 38,000 different people last fiscal year alone.
In our central office in the city of San Mateo, we will be holding a very brief prayer service with special remembrances for the homeless, the incarcerated, and the poorest residents of this county whom we serve by virtue of our place as part of the county’s safety net. Please respond to
svdpLP@yahoo.com if you plan on coming.
Thank you for helping us help others. We CAN change a world!
