Taking seriously the U.N. Millennium Development Goal of achieving “improvement in the lives of 100 million slum dwellers by the year 2015,” the Open Architecture Network is an online, open source community dedicated to improving living conditions through innovative and sustainable design.
The Open Architecture Network was developed by Architecture for Humanity a California-based nonprofit organization that provides free design and architectural services to poor communities. Over time, Architecture for Humanity has developed a network of architects around the world who partner with local communities to work on projects. It also provides money and skills training.
Two years ago, Architecture for Humanity launched the Open Architecture Network site to allow the sharing of ideas, designs and plans and to encourage collaboration on specfic design challenges. The Network currently has about twelve thousand registered users and two thousand projects.
