At Citigroup’s annual meeting this week the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, asked the bank’s shareholders to ratify a proposal that would require Citi to issue a report by the end of the year stating its policies on the collateral used to back many of the bank’s most complicated trades. Unresistable editorial comment: This not a traditional celebration of “high tea”!
This is a great example of how Vincentian entities can use the power of their investments to serve justice. Imagine if the worldwide Vincentian Family organized broadly to shape corporate responsibility more toward peace and to protect the poor. Another form of systemic change! It really works–consider the case of apartheid in South Africa–dis-investment was crucial in its downfall.
Any ideas about how we could move this forward.
