melville-bio1The definitive biography, Elizabeth Bayley Seton 1774-1821, originated from a doctoral dissertation written nearly sixty years ago by Annabelle Melville, at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Little did she anticipate that two years later in 1951, Charles Scribner’s Sons would publish her manuscript as Elizabeth Bayley Seton 1774-1821.

That 1951 publication and its subsequent editions informed generations about this American woman and created a greater awareness about the life and legacy of this religious foundress.  Today, in commemoration of the bicentennial of the establishment of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph’s by Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, this updated edition of Elizabeth Bayley Seton 1774-1821 is released once again.
