Father Frank Vargas, the Superior of the International Mission in the Solomon Islands, wrote to Father Greg yesterday. This is what he said:

You may have seen on TV that Solomon Islands was hit by a tsunami. Thank God, all the confreres in the Guadalcanal Island are safe. However, it hit very badly the Western Province. In the capital, Gizo, the Catholic cathedral was split in two. The tidal wave of 5 meters destroyed many buildings and wharfs. 24 people have been accounted as dead; more people are still missing; thousands are homeless, without food and without drinking water.

I have tapped the SSVP Australia for any help that the Vincentian family can give to the many people suffering very much from the tsunami.

Perhaps there will be further news at the International SSVDP site
