A master builder, husband, and father of four, Pascual Torres Lloret lived out his faith through his work, family life, devotion to the Eucharist, and service to those in need. As a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, he made social justice part of his daily life. He was killed in Carcaixent on September 6, 1936, and beatified in 2001.
Giuseppe Toniolo was an economist, sociologist, a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and devout Catholic who played a crucial role in shaping the Church’s Social Doctrine, leaving a profound mark on Catholic social movements in Italy and Europe during the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century.
Blessed Pierre-René Rogue, a Vincentian priest from Vannes, refused the Civil Constitution of the Clergy during the French Revolution. Arrested on Christmas Eve 1795, he was guillotined on March 3, 1796. Beatified by Pius XI in 1934, he is venerated as a “martyr of the Eucharist” and model of humble, steadfast faith.
During the French Revolution, dozens of members of the Congregation of the Mission were martyred for refusing to take the Civil Constitution of the Clergy oath. Among them was Blessed Louis-Joseph François, who died on September 3, 1792, for his loyalty to the Catholic Church.
September is often called the “Vincentian month,” and with good reason. On September 27, the universal Church celebrates Saint Vincent de Paul, whose vision of following Christ, Evangelizer of the Poor, has inspired generations of Christians and given rise to an extraordinarily diverse spiritual family. Yet Saint Vincent’s solemn celebration is not the only important date that fills the month.
Blessed Isabel Cristina Mrad Campos (1962–1982), a young Brazilian, lived with joy, faith, and service. She dreamed of becoming a pediatrician, but her life was cut short when she bravely defended her dignity and fidelity to Christ against an attempted assault. Martyred “out of hatred for the faith,” her witness shows that holiness is possible in youth and that love triumphs over evil.
Ghebre Michael, a 19th-century Ethiopian monk, tirelessly sought truth and, after years of study, travel, and persecution, converted to Catholicism. Because of his faith, he was imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately died a martyr, leaving behind a powerful testimony of fidelity, teaching, and love for the truth.
Blessed Luigi Bordino lived a life of deep faith, humble service, and heroic charity. From rural Italy to the battlefields of Russia and the hospital wards of Turin, he gave himself completely to God and the suffering.
A jurist, husband, father, member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and active lay apostle, Luis Belda made faith a concrete way of serving people in need and participating in society. His life, cut short amid the violence of the summer of 1936, culminated in a witness of fidelity, forgiveness, and Christian hope.
