In Miami, Florida, the Ladies of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul are offering a powerful witness of Vincentian service to migrants and families living in poverty.

In Caño Roto, on the outskirts of Madrid, Spain, the parish of La Crucifixión del Señor tells a story of faith rooted in closeness, service, and the Vincentian spirit of practical love for the poor.

Under an adapted Rule of the French Daughters of Charity approved by Archbishop Carroll, a novitiate was completed, and seventeen women became the first vowed American Sisters of Charity July 19, 1813.

Antoine-Hippolyte Nicolle, shaped by early suffering and profound faith, grew into a Vincentian priest whose life was marked by spiritual depth, missionary zeal, and unwavering devotion to the Virgin Mary. His legacy includes renewing the Valfleury sanctuary and founding the Archconfraternity of the Holy Agony to pray for the dying.

Jeanne Antide Thouret, born in 1765 in Sancey, France, founded the Sisters of Charity in Besançon in 1799, dedicating herself to serving the poor, educating children, and caring for the sick, expanding her mission to various countries despite numerous challenges. Her legacy of faith and charity remains alive today through the congregation, which continues to adapt to the world’s challenges to serve those in need.

To be a Vincentian is to answer a call from God. This is why we call it a “vocation,” a word which is rooted in the Latin word meaning “to call.” Unlike volunteers, who sign up to do something, we join the Society in order to be something. Volunteers are volunteers until the task is complete. Vincentians are Vincentians until we are complete. This vocation is our pathway of formation, leading us towards the holiness God wishes for us on our lifelong journey of becoming.

Louise was also responsible for the Daughters of Charity at the general hospital of La Salpêtrière, which received the influx of poor people whose numbers had multiplied during the Fronde.
