Today, October 3, 2026, we, the members of the Vincentian Family, pray for the inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities in ministry.
Every baptized person has gifts to offer the Church. Yet people with intellectual disabilities are sometimes treated only as recipients of care rather than as disciples capable of prayer, service, leadership, and witness.
True inclusion means more than welcoming someone into a church building. It means providing accessible formation, adapting communication, recognizing different ways of learning, and creating meaningful opportunities to participate in liturgy, catechesis, outreach, and community life.
People with intellectual disabilities can reveal dimensions of faith that others overlook: trust, directness, joy, perseverance, and an ability to form sincere relationships. The Church is diminished whenever their voices and gifts remain absent.
Saint Vincent taught his followers to encounter each person with profound respect. A Vincentian community must therefore resist attitudes that measure human worth by intellectual ability, productivity, or independence.
We pray today for persons with intellectual disabilities who desire to serve in ministry. May pastors and communities listen to them, discover their gifts, and remove unnecessary barriers. May families and support workers receive encouragement, and may every parish recognize that ministry belongs to the whole People of God.
Word of God
“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
(1 Corinthians 12:7)
Prayer
Holy Spirit, help us recognize Your gifts in every person. Open our ministries to people with intellectual disabilities, teach us to communicate with patience and respect, and make our communities places where everyone can serve and belong. Amen.
