Shirikisho Dispensary Maternity: Bringing Safe Birth Closer to Families

In Homa Bay County, Kenya, the Oyugis Integrated Project (OIP) continues to be a concrete sign of mercy and hope. OIP is a project of the Congregation of the Brothers of Our Lady Mother of Mercy, also known as the CMM Brothers. Since 1997, it has served people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS in Kasipul Constituency and the wider Homa Bay County, offering health care, home-based care, support for orphans, food assistance, vocational training, and awareness programs.

One of its most meaningful recent steps is the opening and beginning of operations of the Shirikisho Dispensary Maternity.

For many expectant mothers in the area, pregnancy and childbirth have often involved uncertainty and risk. Some families have had to travel long distances to reach health facilities. Others have faced congestion in nearby hospitals. In some cases, mothers were at risk of giving birth at home without skilled care. These are not abstract challenges. They are the daily realities that can place mothers and newborn children in danger.

The new maternity unit responds directly to these needs by bringing safe, accessible, and quality maternal services closer to the community.

The opening of the Shirikisho Dispensary Maternity was more than the inauguration of a building. It was a sign of life. It marked a new chapter in OIP’s mission to uphold human dignity and improve the well-being of vulnerable families. The unit is intended to help reduce maternal and infant health risks, increase safe deliveries, and contribute to the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of infections.

On March 6, 2026, the maternity unit officially began its operations. That same day, the first delivery was successfully conducted. For the community and for the OIP team, this first birth was deeply symbolic. It was the beginning of a ministry that will accompany mothers, welcome children safely into the world, and strengthen families at one of the most important moments of life.

This story speaks powerfully to the Vincentian Family. The Vincentian charism calls us to respond to real needs with practical love. Here, that love becomes a maternity bed, trained care, a safer delivery, and a shorter journey for a mother in labor. It becomes the protection of life at its most fragile beginning.

The Shirikisho Dispensary Maternity reminds us that health care is not only a service. It is an expression of dignity. When a mother can give birth close to home, with care, safety, and respect, the whole community is strengthened. When a child is born in a place prepared to receive life, hope becomes visible.

In Oyugis, the Brothers of Our Lady Mother of Mercy and the Oyugis Integrated Project show what mercy looks like when it listens to the needs of the people and responds with courage, compassion, and action.

A maternity unit may seem like a local project, but for every mother who enters it, every child born there, and every family spared unnecessary risk, it becomes something much greater: a promise that life is precious, that dignity matters, and that no community should be left without the care it needs.

Based on information from Bulletin No. 299, April 2026, of the Oyugis Integrated Project.
