Vincentius Nijmegen: When Poverty Is Met with Food, Friendship, and Movement
In Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, the Vincentian mission is alive in a form that is practical, creative, and close to everyday life. The Vincentian Association of Nijmegen works to ease poverty and loneliness in the city and surrounding area, while also encouraging health through movement, sports, and healthy food.
Its work begins with a simple conviction: every person counts.
For many people, poverty is not only the absence of money. It can mean eating poorly because healthy food is too expensive. It can mean staying indoors because sports or social activities feel out of reach. It can mean feeling ashamed, isolated, or forgotten. It can mean that a small problem at home becomes a crisis because there is no financial margin, no support network, and no one to ask for help.
The Vincentian Association of Nijmegen tries to respond to these realities in concrete ways. Through accessible meals, social encounters, low-cost shops, sports activities, and projects that encourage healthy choices, the association helps people recover more than material stability. It helps them reconnect with others, regain confidence, and take steps toward a healthier and more dignified life.
One of its most visible signs of care is the 50-cent shop. There, clothing, shoes, toys, household items, and other everyday goods are available at a very low price. But the shop is more than a place to buy things. It is also a place of encounter. A cup of coffee or tea, a conversation, and the presence of volunteers create an atmosphere where people are not reduced to their poverty.
The Association also understands that health is deeply connected to poverty. When money is short, healthy food, movement, and participation in community life often become harder to access. That is why its projects promote sports, walking, healthy meals, and activities for children and adults. These are not secondary concerns. They are part of human dignity.
To help someone move, eat well, meet others, or feel welcome is also Vincentian service.
This local ministry reminds the Vincentian Family that charity must pay attention to the whole person. A family may need food, but also encouragement. A child may need clothing, but also play, health, and confidence. An adult may need financial help, but also friendship and a reason to leave the house. A lonely person may need not only assistance, but a place where someone knows their name.
The Vincentian Association of Nijmegen shows that fighting poverty is not only about responding to emergencies but it is also about building daily pathways toward belonging, health, and hope.
In a society where poverty can be hidden behind closed doors, this project opens doors. It creates spaces where people can be helped without shame, welcomed without judgment, and encouraged to take part in community life again.
In Nijmegen, the Vincentian spirit becomes a meal, a conversation, a walk, a child’s activity, a simple item bought for 50 cents, and a volunteer who believes that every person matters.
