For children growing up in poverty in Bangladesh, education can never be taken for granted. Financial insecurity, unstable employment, family tragedies, and recurring natural disasters often force parents to make painful decisions about their children’s future.

In this context, child sponsorship becomes much more than financial assistance. It protects childhood, preserves the right to education, and gives children the opportunity to imagine a future that poverty might otherwise place beyond their reach.

The stories of Protul and Nemsy show how one person’s generosity can change the direction of a child’s life.

Protul: A New Beginning After a Devastating Loss

Protul is 10 years old and attends third grade. His childhood has been marked by a profound tragedy: his father died by suicide, leaving his mother alone to care for three children.

To support the family, Protul’s mother works more than ten hours a day in a garment factory. She earns approximately 90 euros a month, an income that is not enough to provide adequate food, health care, and education for all three children.

Without outside support, Protul’s schooling and personal development would have been placed at serious risk.

Through the sponsorship program, he now lives and studies at the St. Guido Maria Conforti Hostel in Noluakuri. There, he can attend school regularly, receive the assistance he needs, and grow up in a peaceful and supportive environment.

Protul is described as a committed student who has formed new friendships and feels happy and secure at the hostel. His life is no longer defined only by loss and economic hardship. It now also contains companionship, learning, and possibility.

When he speaks about the future, Protul says he dreams of joining the military. Above all, he hopes to build a better life for himself and his family.

Nemsy: From the Threat of Early Marriage to a Dream of Nursing

Nemsy is 11 years old and lives with her parents and sister in a farming family. Her parents work hard, but their income is barely enough to meet the household’s most basic needs.

The family’s financial situation became so difficult that her father could no longer afford her school expenses. In desperation, he began to consider arranging an early marriage for his daughter.

The decision was not rooted in a lack of love. It reflected the painful choices families can face when poverty leaves them with few alternatives. For Nemsy, however, early marriage would probably have meant the end of her education and the loss of the freedom to shape her own future.

The arrival of sponsorship completely changed the course of her life.

With the help of benefactors, the program was able to cover her school expenses and provide books, notebooks, a backpack, and other educational materials. Nemsy could remain in school and continue developing her talents.

Today, she has a clear and generous ambition: she wants to become a nurse, care for people who are suffering, and support her parents when they grow older.

A relatively modest contribution has therefore done much more than purchase school supplies. It has protected a young girl from early marriage and allowed a future health care worker to continue pursuing her vocation.

How the Sponsorship Program Works

The initiative is promoted by the Italian National Federation of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul through its international solidarity and partnership work.

Rather than offering a single emergency payment, sponsorship provides continuing assistance designed around the real needs of an individual child. Depending on the circumstances, donations can help cover:

• school fees and educational materials;
• food and basic necessities;
• safe accommodation;
• health care and personal assistance;
• protection from exploitation, early marriage, and school abandonment.

In Protul’s case, the support makes it possible for him to live in a supervised hostel, study regularly, and receive daily care. For Nemsy, it pays the expenses that allow her to remain with her family while continuing her education.

The model connects the generosity of donors with practical support delivered through trusted local partners. The funding received is transformed into food, books, shelter, protection, and opportunities tailored to each child’s circumstances.

Education as Protection

The stories of Protul and Nemsy also reveal that education is not simply one benefit among many. In situations of extreme poverty, it can serve as a form of protection.

Remaining in school reduces a child’s vulnerability to exploitation, hazardous labor, trafficking, early marriage, and social exclusion. A secure educational environment also provides friendships, stability, responsible adults, and the confidence to make plans for the future.

For Protul, education offers a path through grief and instability. For Nemsy, it safeguards her freedom to grow, choose a profession, and determine the direction of her own life.

Supporting a child’s education means protecting both the present and the future.

Every Sponsorship Changes a Story

Protul and Nemsy come from different families and have endured different forms of hardship. Yet they share something essential: without sponsorship, their futures would have been far more uncertain.

Today, both can attend school, grow up in safer surroundings, develop their abilities, and dream of lives shaped by something other than poverty.

Behind every sponsored child is also a family that regains hope. A parent is relieved of an impossible burden. A right is restored. A dream is given time to grow.

The program’s message is simple: a better future can begin with the decision of one person to walk alongside a child.

Through sponsorship, donors do not merely provide financial assistance. They help ensure education, nourishment, protection, and new opportunities for children whose dreams might otherwise be extinguished far too soon.
