As the war in Ukraine continues, it is the country’s children who remain among the most vulnerable victims of the conflict. For many, daily life is shaped by uncertainty, fear, and disruption. What should be years of learning, friendship, and carefree play have instead become years marked by air raid sirens, damaged communities, ruins and constant concern for the safety of loved ones.

Children across Ukraine continue to endure the consequences of ongoing bombardments. Many live with the fear that a parent, relative, neighbour, or friend may become the next casualty of war. Schools and hospitals have been damaged or forced to reduce services, while many families struggle to access the support and stability that every child needs.

The impact extends far beyond physical safety. Childhood development depends on education, social interaction, and opportunities to play and learn. Yet for many Ukrainian children, these opportunities have been severely limited. Some children spend long periods sheltering indoors, while others attend classes in underground bunkers converted into makeshift classrooms. Dedicated teachers and AIC volunteers continue to provide educational resources under difficult and often dangerous conditions, determined to ensure that learning does not come to a complete standstill.

For children under the age of ten, memories of peaceful times are fading. Many have spent a significant portion of their lives living through conflict, while the youngest know little else. The sounds of warning sirens and the rush to underground shelters have become a normal part of growing up.

Yet amid these challenges, hope remains.

AIC Ukraine’s Children’s project is committed to bringing moments of joy, comfort, and encouragement to children affected by the war. Working with local partners and volunteers, AIC Ukraine supports activities designed to provide children with a temporary escape from the realities that surround them. Whether through educational programmes, recreational activities, creative workshops, or community gatherings, these initiatives help children reconnect with the simple experiences that every child deserves. Volunteers also organise spiritual retreats for those re-enforcing their faith in God despite the war.

The smiles seen during these activities may last only a few hours, but their impact reaches much further. They help restore confidence, strengthen emotional wellbeing, and remind children that they have not been forgotten. In communities where uncertainty has become part of daily life, even small moments of happiness can make a meaningful difference.

The resilience shown by Ukraine’s children is remarkable. Despite the hardships they face, they continue to learn, laugh, dream, and hope for a better future. Through the generosity of supporters and the dedication of volunteers, AIC will continue its mission of standing alongside these children, offering practical support and helping to create moments of normality in extraordinary circumstances.

Together with its partners, AIC Ukraine is helping to ensure that even in the darkest of times, the children of Ukraine continue to see a light of hope for the future.
