When a natural disaster strikes, the immediate response understandably focuses on safety, shelter and basic survival. However, turning an empty, rebuilt house into a functioning home is often an overwhelming financial hurdle for families facing the complete loss of their possessions.

Managed by the US Society of St. Vincent de Paul Disaster Services Corporation (DSC), this initiative has been helping communities rebuild since the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. House in a Box was designed with a core Vincentian principle in mind: restoring dignity. While donated, secondhand furniture is a wonderful blessing, families thrust into situational poverty by a disaster also deserve the emotional uplift of a fresh start.

What is a “House in a Box?”:

The program provides families with a complete, pre-packaged kit of brand-new furniture and essential home goods. By purchasing in bulk from trusted vendors, DSC builds a comprehensive household setup at highly discounted prices. The cost typically starts around $5,000 for a family of four.

Each kit includes exactly what a family needs to live comfortably from Day 1: beds and fresh linens, dressers, dishes, silverware, cookware, a dining room set, a comfortable couch and bathroom essentials.

Instead of piecing together mismatched items from various donation centers, families receive a complete, dignified home setup. Through Disaster Services logistics partners, all items arrive together on pallets. They are delivered directly to the first floor or garage to make moving in as easy as possible.

Working Together Locally in Georgia and Texas

House in a Box relies on extensive local collaboration. Disaster Services does not distribute kits directly to individuals. Instead, they work closely with certified Disaster Case Managers, local SVdP Conferences and Councils, and Long-Term Recovery Groups. This strict vetting process ensures that help reaches those in dire need. The program heavily prioritizes low-income households, individuals on fixed incomes and those with special needs. This localized approach recently drove two of our major deployments:

Hurricane Helene Recovery (Coffee County, Georgia):

Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, SVdP’s Georgia Archdiocesan Council requested our assistance. In partnership with a local nonprofit called Hope for Coffee, we processed applications and coordinated the delivery of House in a Box kits to nine newly rebuilt homes. Our streamlined partnerships allowed us to process these requests and coordinate deliveries within a matter of weeks.

Apartment Explosion Response (Dallas, Texas):

When a tragic apartment explosion displaced 20 individual families last month, the City of Dallas reached out directly for assistance. We coordinated seamlessly with City of Dallas Emergency Management, SVdP’s North Texas Diocesan Council and various other nonprofits to order and deliver standardized kits. SVdP North Texas volunteers provided exceptional on-the-ground support by coordinating recipient deliveries, unpacking boxes and building furniture. They also ensured holistic care by providing thrift store vouchers and spiritual support to help families navigate their sudden displacement.

On June 17, DSC and SVdP North Texas were recognized by the Dallas City Council for the organizations’ service in assisting the families affected by the Oak Cliff apartment explosion.
