The risen Christ is the one who lights up our darkness. Not to close the doors, but to open them is what he wants us to do.
It matters to Jesus’ disciples to close or not to close the doors with locks, but not to Jesus. For he comes in just the same.
So, nothing can stop him from showing up before them and standing in their midst. For he is now beyond the constraints of space and time since his is a glorified body.
And Jesus uses the new properties of his glorious body to wake up the faith of his disciples. To take them out of the dark, out of their fears, anxieties, disorientation, despair, sadness.
He calms down, then, those with feelings of shame and guilt, since they have left him in tough times. He says to them, “Peace be with you.” And he shows them right away his hands and his side. Thus, they see it is him, the Lord. In this way, too, they can no longer doubt the mercy he shows them. For it comes from the one who has given his life for his friends.
He says to them once more, “Peace be with you.” And he asks them not to close the doors. It is because they have to go forth, for he sends them as the Father has sent him. Yes, Jesus shares with them his mission of forgiveness, peace, reconciliation. He sends them out to the world so that all may live as one community of love, prayer and sharing. True to what he has taught and to the breaking of bread. No doubt, he orients them, he shows them the way to go.
And since they receive the Holy Spirit, they cannot help but not to close the tomb. Rather, they leave it open as Jesus is no longer there. That is, they get to embrace fully the hope and joy of the Resurrection.
Lord Jesus, grant us not to close our doors. We shall thus not be like the snails who cannot help but lock themselves up in their shells (SV.EN XII:81). Give us your Spirit to make us know and taste your peace in these tough times. To teach us to return good for evil, blessing for curse. And show mercy to us who lack faith and courage, so that we may love you and believe in you though we have not seen you.
