On this same day, we celebrate the foundation of the Servants of Charity, established in 1908. Founded by Saint Luigi Guanella on March 24, 1908, in Como, Italy, this clerical religious Congregation—also known as the “Guanellians”—was born out of a passionate commitment to serve the marginalized, especially the poor, disabled, and socially abandoned. With the motto “In all things, charity”, the community professed perpetual vows in the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Como and quickly expanded, gaining Vatican recognition in 1912. Since then, the Servants of Charity have grown to over 500 priests and Brothers, extending their ministries across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Their apostolate includes running schools, evening educational centers, and residential programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities—concretely living out Guanella’s vision of compassionate presence and practical service. Guided by the spiritual principle of unity—a “bond of charity”—they foster deep fraternal communion among members and solidarity with those they serve. The Servants of Charity remain a vibrant expression of the Vincentian family’s dedication to seeing and serving Christ in every vulnerable person.
