On this same day, we celebrate the foundation of the Guardians of the poor, established in 1997, by Hererinana Zephilin in Bujumbura, Burundi. A devoted branch of the Vincentian Family, this institution sprang up with a clear mission: to safeguard the dignity and well‑being of the poorest and most vulnerable in its local community. Though small in size, the Miserable Guardians embody the core Vincentian values—compassion, respect, service, and solidarity—through their daily efforts caring for the sick, assisting street families, and providing spiritual accompaniment to those in distress. Inspired by the charism of St. Vincent de Paul, they seek to empower individuals through a combination of practical aid and heartfelt presence. Rooted in humility and guided by prayer, the Guardians continue their mission in the spirit of “seeing Christ in the poor,” demonstrating that even modest acts of mercy can transform lives and foster hope where it is most needed.
