Jesus is the light of the world.  He does the works of the one who sent him.  And to open the eyes of blind folks is part of these works.

As he walks along, Jesus sees a man blind from birth.  The disciples see him also.  Yet Jesus sees in a positive way while the disciples see in a negative way.  Hence, we can say that the disciples are blind folks too.

Some of the healed man’s neighbors are blind folks also.  For they do not recognize him, though they have seen him before as a beggar.  And the Pharisees and other Jews who think like them are blind folks much more.  After all, just like that, they judge him not to be from God since he does not keep the Sabbath.  Or they doubt the cure of the blind man.

The parents of the man born blind are blind folks also.  For they know almost nothing, so they admit for fear of the Jews.

So, we blind folks are not few.  But the more our number grows, the brighter and more intense the light gets; the dark cannot put it out.  All that is left for us to do is to meet Jesus, the source of life and in whose light we see light.

He does the strenuous and odd to open the eyes of the man blind from birth.  He will do so, too, to open our eyes, slow and foolish that we are to see.

And he will improve our eyesight, though little by little, in keeping with our ability and at our own pace.  Until we get to see not the appearance but the heart and to have strength to stand up for the truth.  And until the Son of Man makes himself known to us and we, in turn, accept his invitation.

Yes, Jesus calls us to believe in him.  That is, he wants to lead us from the dark into the light of faith.

Lord Jesus, grant us to believe in you.  To be taken further and further into your personal space and let in on how you see and react.  Thus, we will not be blind folks but will live as children of the light, good, just, true.  And, with you, we will fulfill the law and the prophets as we love our neighbor as ourselves to the end.  To giving up our bodies and shedding our blood.  And give us eyes and a heart for the poor so that we may see you in them (SV.EN XI:26).
