On this same day, we also joyfully celebrate the foundation of the Sisters of Compassion, established in 1892, formally known as the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion. Founded by Venerable Suzanne Aubert in Hiruhārama (Jerusalem) on New Zealand’s Whanganui River, this unique, locally-born Catholic Congregation dedicated itself to serving both Māori and Pākehā, regardless of creed. With a deep Marian spirituality and a compassionate response to suffering, the Sisters have operated orphanages, hospitals, soup kitchens, and elder care homes in Wellington and beyond, including Fiji. Committed to living “In Your Providence is Our Hope,” they continue to accompany the most vulnerable, embodying Mother Aubert’s vision of practical charity and cultural respect that has endured for over a century.
