Hymn to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
© 2022, Javier F. Chento
As we celebrate the feast of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton on January 4, we remember a woman whose life radiated faith, courage, and compassion. She walked through suffering, uncertainty, and profound loss, yet her trust in God only deepened. In her, the Church in the United States found its first native-born saint—an ordinary woman transformed by extraordinary grace, whose journey continues to inspire generations of believers.
Elizabeth Ann Seton’s heart was shaped in the fire of love: love for God, love for her family, and love for all those who were forgotten or in need. She listened to the cries of orphans, widows, and the poor with a tenderness that revealed Christ’s own compassion. In founding the Sisters of Charity and dedicating her life to education, service, and spiritual formation, she built spaces of hope where others could discover God’s presence and mercy.
The hymn we share today is a heartfelt tribute to that legacy. Its verses echo the key moments of Mother Seton’s life—her perseverance in trial, her unwavering trust in Jesus, her commitment to forming hearts in charity, and her ability to find God’s will in the simple rhythms of daily life. With poetic reverence, the song becomes both a remembrance and a prayer, inviting us to imitate her openness to grace.
As we listen to this hymn on her feast day, may we allow its melody and its message to touch our own hearts. Like Mother Seton, may we learn to see Christ in the poor, to embrace God’s will with courage, and to walk the pilgrim road of faith with humility and joy. May her intercession strengthen us to love and serve more deeply, following the path where truth, mercy, and charity meet.

Lyrics:
O Mother Seton, heart of flame,
whose trust in God was true,
you walked the path of grief and grace,
God formed your heart anew.
You heard the orphaned children’s cry,
the widow’s silent plea;
you opened wide your tender arms,
and taught Christ’s charity.
Mother Seton, make our hearts like yours,
to see Christ in the poor.
Grant us the zeal of charity,
to love and serve Him more.
Amid the cross of illness, loss,
your faith did not grow dim.
You whispered through your tears and pain,
“my Jesus, I trust Him.”
You gathered daughters to the Lord,
in humble, simple ways;
and built a house of hope and light,
a school of love and praise.
Mother Seton, make our hearts like yours,
to see Christ in the poor.
Grant us the zeal of charity,
to love and serve Him more.
Teach us to walk your pilgrim road,
embrace God’s will each day,
to find His presence in our tasks,
and serve Him as we pray.
Saint Seton, guide us on the path
where truth and mercy meet;
that we may love with burning hearts,
and serve with willing feet.
Mother Seton, make our hearts like yours,
to see Christ in the poor.
Grant us the zeal of charity,
to love and serve Him more.
O Mother, friend of all who seek
the peace Christ longs to give,
pray that we follow where you led,
and in His grace may live.
