The Rosalie Projects: A Taxi for Kigali
The project “A Taxi for Kigali” was carried out in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.
The goal was simple but essential: through the purchase of 2 motorcycles, to help two fathers support their families by working as moto-taxi drivers.
The community of the Daughters of Charity identified the two beneficiary families and chose the type of motorcycles to purchase in order to start this very common form of transportation in Kigali.
“The administrative procedures were completed, the motorcycles were registered and insured, and the protective equipment for the drivers was purchased. Beforehand, the fathers had saved money in order to obtain their motorcycle driver’s licenses.” — Sr. Théodosie
In April 2025, the two motorcycles were fully operational, and the two fathers were able to begin their professional activity. This professional reintegration project is therefore fully completed.
Today, they work every day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., like any salaried worker. Approximately 50 people per day benefit from their moto-taxi services. Fuel vendors and the government also benefit from the economic impact of this activity (gasoline purchases, taxes, fees).
Above all, these fathers have regained the dignity of work; they are respected, their social status is valued, and they provide financial stability for their families. In total, 12 people—the members of the two families—directly benefit from the project.
“This project is entirely self-sufficient. The moto-taxi activity generates enough income to cover expenses and ensure the economic growth of the families!” — Sister. Théodosie
They are now able to pay their rent, their children’s school fees, health insurance contributions, clothing, and daily food. They have three years to repay an agreed-upon amount and then pass the opportunity on to other families. They are even managing to save for future projects, especially small businesses for the wives and eventually purchasing a home.
The testimony of Jean Pierre N., father of three children, perfectly illustrates the impact of this reintegration assistance:
“I am happy; I have fewer worries. Thanks to you, my family is happy because we now live in good conditions, better than before. Yes, before, I had a miserable life without work. Now I have hope for the future, I have a motorcycle, I am working.
Thank you for the help I received through the Daughters of Charity. Thank you to all the benefactors who supported my family. Now that I have my motorcycle, I will work to support myself and develop my family. My hope for the future is to work hard to have a family home, to ensure my children’s school expenses in order to prepare their future. I want this motorcycle to be a source of sustainable development to continue meeting the needs of my family. Thank you very much, may God bless you. A big THANK YOU!”
