Volunteers with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are in Philadelphia this week, joining St. James School to repair homes and strengthen the neighborhood.
The group began work at the home of Linda, a resident in downtown Philadelphia. After gathering for breakfast, the volunteers set out for the first project of the week. The fence around Linda’s home was in need of removal and repair. By the end of the day, the old wooden fence had been torn down and replaced.
She had an incident recently where someone came in and rattled her door, which really scared her.
Sister Luke shared, “What at first looked impossible was completed in just one day through teamwork, rolling up our sleeves, and prayer. Linda’s joy was contagious, her new fence not only brought beauty to her yard, but also gave her a sense of safety and peace.”
This is the second time the Sisters have partnered with St. James School to repair homes in the city.
Later in the week, volunteers moved to Hilton Avenue, where they worked with Robert and his 94-year-old mother, longtime residents of the neighborhood. Together, they built a retaining wall and planted fall mums to brighten the space. What began as bricks and flowers became an expression of care and dignity for a family who has given much to their community.
Next, attention will turn to repairing ceilings and walls for a woman who hopes not only to patch holes but to brighten her home with color and light.
Sister Luke, “Each project is a reminder that mission is not only about fixing what is broken. It is about presence, compassion, and being the hands of Christ for one another.”
This week in Philadelphia is a reminder that love can build fences of safety, walls of strength, and homes filled with beauty.
