    A Place to Rest Easy

When Vicki Newton and her husband were searching for the right living arrangement for their daughter, Tana, they faced a difficult challenge: How to support her independence while ensuring her safety and care. Tana is trusting and kind, a person who “would help anyone who asked,” Vicki said. But her openness has also made her vulnerable, and after trying several housing options over the years, including living at home and in rental units, nothing ever felt like the right fit.

“We knew she wanted independence,” Vicki shared. “We knew she needed a place where she could make her own choices, but still have support when needed. That balance is hard to find.”

They found that balance at Nazareth Villages.

Tana and her mother, Vicki, stand in front of Nazareth Villages.

Located on the scenic campus of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Bardstown, Kentucky, Nazareth Villages is a two-building affordable housing complex serving low- and middle-income senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. Designed to offer more than just shelter, the Villages provide a peaceful, supportive environment with the resources necessary for residents to live independently. Apartments range in size and design, and many are equipped with accessibility features like walk-in showers and handrails. A mobile food pantry and pharmacy deliveries help meet daily needs.

Vicki learned about the Villages through family connections and friends who had shared positive experiences. After reaching out to staff and visiting the grounds, she knew they had found something special. Tana moved into her apartment in November.

“From the beginning, the staff made it clear what was expected. They asked for cleanliness. They encouraged community participation. And from day one, they treated Tana with respect.”

Since moving in, Tana has flourished. She’s more confident and self-reliant. She pays attention to due dates, keeps her apartment clean, and is learning to manage her finances with some support. But what stands out most is how engaged she’s become in the community.

Tana and Vicki sit in on a musical performance in the Villages’ community room.

“She plays bingo on Tuesdays. She goes to holiday parties. She joins in on the ice cream outings. She has made friends and built relationships with neighbors.”

Nazareth Villages offers more than just housing; it offers a sense of belonging. Residents describe the Villages as a place where friendships grow and people look out for one another. Whether joining community garden efforts, participating in group outings, or simply sharing a conversation in the hallway, the connections made within the Villages contribute to an atmosphere of mutual support and shared purpose.

This community is grounded in the values of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, who have long been committed to serving those in need. Their mission is evident in every detail.

“The staff is incredible,” Vicki said. “They truly care about the people who live there. From the front desk to maintenance to the management team, everyone shows kindness and patience. They go above and beyond.”

For families like the Newtons, the peace of mind provided by Nazareth Villages cannot be overstated.

“My husband and I are getting older. We know we will not be able to care for Tana forever,” Vicki said. “Knowing that she is somewhere safe, where the doors are locked, where people check in on her, where the staff cares deeply about every person who lives there, means everything to us.”

The Nazareth Campus offers residents a safe place to walk and enjoy the scenery, far different from many other affordable housing neighborhoods.

Vicki’s ties to Nazareth run deep. Her great-aunt once lived there. Another great-aunt was a Sister. Her mother went to college on the campus. And now, Tana calls it home.

“In a way, we have come full circle.”

Reflecting on her family’s experience, Vicki offers a message of gratitude:

“Thank you for building this community. Thank you for believing in people like Tana. Thank you for giving families like mine a place to rest easy.”
