The Ozanams embarked on several journeys in Ozanam’s last years, which they desperately hoped would allow his health to improve. The travels also provided him with opportunities for research and distraction. An account of his travels in Spain, for instance, occupied him and gave him purpose. His Un pèlerinage au pays du Cid (A Pilgrimage to the Land of the Cid) as well as his La civilization au cinquième siècle (History of Civilization in the Fifth Century) would be published posthumously. He was not a man who took rest easily, however. As he traveled, he visited conferences of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, inspiring the members with his words.
