Imagine a beating heart, a symbol of divine love that transcends time. This is the essence of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, deeply rooted in the faith and mission of the Daughters of Charity.
When we pray to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, what we are really doing is opening our own hearts to the personal, deep, and compassionate love that Christ has for each one of us. He gave us a clear and demanding commandment: “This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you.”
Jesus had — and still has — an immensely generous heart, open to all, especially to the poor, the lowly, and those who suffer. We all know people we call “big-hearted” because they know how to welcome, understand, and accompany others. Devotion to the Sacred Heart is not just a pious prayer, it is an invitation to make our hearts more like Christ’s, to cultivate a love that is concrete and active — Gospel-style.
Having a big heart does not just mean giving money — though that, too, is part of charity. Generosity also means learning to forgive sincerely, to listen patiently, to share our time, to comfort, to serve without expecting anything in return. In the Vincentian spirit, that kind of generosity becomes humble closeness to those who suffer, joyful availability, and active compassion. Jesus was generous to the very end, giving Himself completely, even though He had no material wealth. He gave us His presence, His word, His comfort — His whole life.
May His Sacred Heart teach us to love as He loves: without measure, without conditions, with tenderness and commitment.
