In a world often marked by fragmentation, crisis, and moral uncertainty, the Pilgrims of Hope Programme (POH) in Kenya stands as a beacon of integrated Christian living. Spearheaded by Brother Andrea Sifuna, CMM (PhD), the initiative is a response to both spiritual hunger and the pressing socio-economic and environmental needs of contemporary Kenyan communities. Since its inception in 2022, POH has already engaged over 3,000 participants—students, teachers, and parishioners—with widespread acclaim among clergy and laity alike.
Origins Rooted in Mercy and Mission
The Pilgrims of Hope Programme is coordinated by Brother Andrea Sifuna, a dedicated member of the Brothers CMM—a Catholic religious Institute founded in 1844 by Bishop Joannes Zwijsen in the Netherlands. The Institute’s mission has always revolved around care for the vulnerable and holistic youth development through education and spiritual guidance. Now present across four continents, including African countries like Kenya, Namibia, Tanzania, and Zambia, the Brothers CMM actively support parish ministries and community outreach, guided by Christ’s words:
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)
Vision: A Spiritual Journey of Purpose
The program draws inspiration from the Pauline metaphor:
“Run to win the prize…” (1 Cor 9:24-27).
Here, the Christian life is understood as a purposeful spiritual journey—a race not against others, but against worldly distractions and personal weaknesses. The initiative cultivates vigilance, inner transformation, and committed discipleship.
Holistic Evangelization: The Fourfold Purpose
Though deeply rooted in Catholic spirituality, POH extends its reach into everyday human concerns. It is guided by four central objectives:
- Spiritual Renewal – Inviting the faithful into deeper prayer and sacramental life.
- Human Dignity – Promoting the sanctity of life and the common good.
- Environmental Stewardship – Fostering care for creation.
- Integral Human Development – Addressing socio-economic issues through faith-informed solutions.
Three-Part Programme Structure
The POH curriculum is organized into three interrelated segments:
Part I: Awakening Spiritual Awareness
This section lays the foundation for personal transformation and community discipleship:
- Christian Leadership modeled on Jesus the Good Shepherd.
- Roles of parishioners in families, Small Christian Communities (SCCs), and parishes.
- Deepened prayer life and sacramental participation.
- Marian devotion as a model of discipleship.
- Understanding Christian suffering in contrast to secular logic.
- Embracing the Eucharist as the “Source and Summit” of Christian life.
Part II: Promoting Integral Human Development
Rooted in the Church’s Social Doctrine, this part connects faith with action:
- Teaching stewardship through tithes and material support for the Church.
- Encouraging sustainable, parish-based economic initiatives, such as SACCOs and agricultural projects.
- Addressing youth challenges, including drug abuse and unhealthy relationships.
- Promoting research-based parish needs assessments.
- Providing training in strategic planning and environmental conservation.
Part III: Engaging Emerging Issues in the Light of Faith
This dynamic section examines contemporary moral and social questions from a Catholic perspective:
- Gender identity, tattoos, dress codes, and body modification.
- Use of social media and pet ownership.
- Modern family models, surrogacy, and contraceptives.
- Human trafficking and personal dignity.
Content is adaptable to the unique needs of each parish, always in collaboration with the local parish priest or moderator.
Target Groups: Transforming the Church from Within
The POH Programme is deliberately designed to be inclusive and participatory. Its reach spans:
- Parish Pastoral Councils
- Youth groups and Catholic student associations
- Men’s and Women’s associations
- Catholic teachers and family life movements
- SCC leaders, devotional groups, and school boards
- Justice and Peace committees
This multi-layered engagement ensures that the spirit of the programme trickles into every corner of parish life and educational institutions.
A Growing Movement
What began as a local initiative has already blossomed into a widespread pastoral movement. With more than 3,000 participants engaged since 2022, the impact is tangible and growing. Testimonials from parish priests and lay leaders highlight the programme’s relevance, practicality, and spiritual depth.
A Call to Hope
In a society where faith can often feel disconnected from real-life struggles, the Pilgrims of Hope Programme serves as a vital bridge. It encourages believers not only to grow in faith but to embody that faith in service to others and care for creation.
As Brother Andrea Sifuna reminds us, this is a journey for all:
“May this programme inspire all participants to journey in hope, grow in faith, and bear lasting fruit in service to the Church and the world.”
