In 1840, Ozanam received the news of his appointment as assistant professor of Foreign Literature at the Sorbonne in Paris. He began his lectures in January 1841, some six months before his marriage to Amélie Soulacroix. His task was to lecture on two types of foreign literature; Italian and Teutonic (dealing with the dawn of literature in Germany). Conscientious by nature, Ozanam journeyed throughout Germany to research the topic carefully and to appreciate fully the milieu of the literature he was about to teach.
