Sisters of Charity Under the Protection of St. Vincent de Paul: A Life of Service and Contemplation
At the heart of the Church, the Sisters of Charity Under the Protection of St. Vincent de Paul are a living witness of dedication to their neighbor and of deep spirituality. Founded on January 6, 1939 in the diocese of Novara, Italy, they are the result of the fusion of two institutes: the Daughters of Charity of Grignasco, founded in 1748 by the noblewoman Gerolama Cavallotta, and the Daughters of Charity of Prato Sesia, founded in 1888 on the initiative of the priest Cesare Arnieta.
A twofold charism: Vincentian and Teresian
The charism of the Sisters of Charity is based on two fundamentals: Vincentian and Teresian spirituality. The first, inspired by St. Vincent de Paul, emphasizes concrete love for the poor, recognizing in them the presence of Christ and promoting humble and disinterested service. The second, inspired by St. Teresa of Avila, calls for an interior journey of union with God, through the “seven dwellings” of the Interior Castle, which represent the stages of the soul towards spiritual perfection.
Activity and global presence
The Sisters of Charity are engaged in the education of youth and the care of the sick and elderly in clinics and nursing homes. In addition to Italy, they are present in Brazil, Burundi, France, Djibouti, India and South Sudan; the General Headquarters is in Novara.
An Institute in constant development
Over the years, the Institute has achieved significant recognition, including pontifical approval in 1977. Today, the Sisters of Charity continue their mission with enthusiasm and dedication, facing the challenges of the contemporary world with the same spirit that animated their founders.
The Sisters of Charity under the protection of St. Vincent de Paul embody a model of religious life that combines action and contemplation, service and prayer. Their history and charism continue to inspire and guide those who seek to live an authentic and committed faith in today’s world.
