Last of the Last Servants of Christ

by | Jun 24, 2025 | Formation, Reflections

Jesus is first since he is last; he is Lord since he is Servant. He wants his disciples to be like him, that is, last and servants of all.

The New Testament portrays Peter as the first in so many ways of all the apostles. And Paul, of course, the least and last of them, also plays a leading role. His letters and the book of Acts, about half of which deals with his life and works, show this.

So, there is no doubt that Peter is preeminent, and Paul is prominent. Yet their lives, words and works show they are so since they are like Jesus (see also Phil 2, 6-11). For they, too, are last and serve all, ready and willing to give up their bodies and shed their blood.

No, Peter and Paul are not with those who think “might makes right.” The two show no power or strength. After all, they have made up their mind to know only Jesus Christ as he hangs on the cross.

So, they rely on God’s power as they stand weak and full of fear and tremble before others. Their weakness and their fear are the basis of their trust in God (SV.EN III:143; SV.EN V:166).

Besides, they are glad to brag that they are weak, so that Christ’s power may show in them. In other words, the throne of God’s mercy is the greatness of human faults, failures, lack of strength (SV.EN XI:130).

Far be it from them, then, to crave and seek profit, wealth, power or fame, to boss around those in their care. And, no, they do not see the Church as a power that strikes fear into the hearts of others. Albeit she does beat death, hell.

Lord Jesus, it is your will that Peter, Paul and the Church be first and play a leading role. Help us to grasp that this means for them to be last and servants of all. Make us welcome your “stumbling grace.”
