Next to the church of Saint-Sulpice, the publisher Emmanuel Bailly had the headquarters of his newspaper La Tribune catholique (at 18 rue Petit-Bourbon, today 38 rue Saint-Sulpice). On Tuesday, April 23, around 8 p.m., six young men including Frederuic Ozanam came there to meet him, and asked him to be president of the charity conference (a position he would hold until 1844). The list of Frédéric Ozanam’s houses in Paris is long and unfortunately it is not easy to discover the sites which have sometimes been destroyed or cannot be identified with any distinctive monument. In contrast, it is at No 38 of the current Rue Saint-Sulpice − previously Rue Petit-Bourbon Saint-Sulpice − that, on 23 April 1833, Emmanuel Bailly welcomed Frédéric Ozanam and his friends, François, Jules, Auguste, Félix and Paul. This meeting founded the first “Charity Conference” which would be placed, after 1834, under the patronage of St Vincent de Paul. A commemorative plaque has been placed on the façade of this building.
