Frédéric often visited Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, a church located close to the school of law. On one such occasion his eyes fell upon the figure of André-Marie Ampère– a relative of Ozanam’s father, a mathematical expert, and a French physician who himself was Lyonnais– who was kneeling and praying fervently. The scene had an immediate and powerful impact upon the young Ozanam. Here was a man of science who was not afraid to display his faith. It was a lesson he would never forget.
Later, Emmanuel Bailly would send the eager young men of the first Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to the pastor of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont for advice on the kinds of works that it would be appropriate for them to do. One of the earliest SSVP conferences was at the parish of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont.
