Seeing Christ in the face of the poor

Borna’s Story: A Journey of Hope and Transformation

Five years ago, we met Borna during one of our regular evening city walks, a routine external task we carried out regularly. We found him in a distressing state: semi-naked, neglected, hungry, and alone, in a small space near the train station. There, he had sought shelter and a roof over his head. I clearly remember his warm eyes and the shy gaze peering out from the darkness, behind the bars.

We began visiting him regularly, bringing him food, clothing, and hygiene products. Communication with him was difficult, as he expressed himself in short, sparse sentences, reflecting the loneliness and isolation he had endured for so long. His life, marked by suffering and a lack of human contact, led him to alcohol addiction, and he became an alcoholic.

Despite these circumstances, we decided to accompany him on his journey. Over the months and years, we never left him alone. With each step, we provided support, ensuring that he would never again be left abandoned. With patience and perseverance, we earned his trust. Two years after our first meeting, Borna took a significant step by entering the Shelter House, a center that provided him with a safe space to continue his recovery.

Since then, Borna has been part of our community. He participates in various activities and has significantly reduced his alcohol intake. Additionally, he has improved his communication skills and found friends to accompany him on his path. We worked with him to access his social rights, securing medical insurance and establishing contact with a doctor who sees him regularly. His physical health has improved greatly, and his participation in the social enterprise program “Ruka koja se daje” [The giving hand] has allowed him to earn some money, as his fragile health permits.

Another important milestone was the reactivation of his family connection. We made sure that Borna could reconnect with his sisters, allowing him to maintain meaningful family relationships. Every Sunday, he participates in adult catechesis, where he shares his experiences of faith, hope, and love with us.

Although he is still homeless, Borna’s life has changed considerably. His future, which once seemed uncertain, is now filled with possibilities. We continue to dream of a future in which Borna has his own home, a place where he can feel fully integrated and safe, far from the darkness of the streets.

Borna’s story is a testament to human resilience and the transformative impact of companionship, commitment, and hope. Through the years, we have learned that, although the road may be long, there is always room for improvement and redemption.
