The Vincentian Family of Latin America and the Caribbean (FAVILA) expresses its concern over new migration policies that undermine human dignity. It demands respect for human rights and reaffirms its commitment to supporting migrants in their pursuit of justice and hope.

STATEMENT OF FAVILA

The Vincentian Family of Latin America and the Caribbean (FAVILA), inspired by the charism of St. Vincent de Paul and committed to the defense of the most vulnerable, expresses its deep concern about the immigration policies of the United States, particularly the practice of handcuffing migrants during the deportation process and the treatment of the countries of the continent.

As the Vincentian Family of Latin America and the Caribbean, we demand from the governments of the region and the United States the unrestricted fulfillment of the International Treaties that protect the Human Rights of all people, regardless of their origin or migratory situation.

We demand from the U.S. authorities:

  • End the practice of handcuffing deported migrants: This measure is not only unnecessary, but also causes unnecessary suffering and humiliation to people who are already in a vulnerable situation.
  • Respect the human rights of all migrants: Guarantee fair and dignified treatment to all migrants, regardless of their origin or migratory status.
  • Comply with International Treaties: Ensure that all actions related to migration are carried out in accordance with international human rights treaties, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the American Convention on Human Rights.

FAVILA, through the Confraternity of Vincentians on the Border, our participation in inter-institutional networks and the action of the different branches that work on the border and in the different countries of the continent, we commit ourselves to continue supporting migrant brothers and sisters, recognizing that migration is a right, that many migrate by force, due to violence or poverty, and, together with them, to recognize their rights and dignified treatment.

Under the motto “Keep the fire burning so that we can be pilgrims of hope”, we want to contribute to the construction of a more just and solidary future for all men and women.
