The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is amplifying its commitment to serve those in need through a groundbreaking initiative: “Immersion: A Point of Re-Entry.” Designed to address the complex challenges faced by returning citizens—individuals reentering society after incarceration—this program offers holistic support to foster a successful transition.
Breaking Barriers for Returning Citizens
Returning to society after incarceration often involves overcoming formidable barriers such as employment discrimination, lack of stable housing, and limited access to educational opportunities. “Immersion” tackles these obstacles by providing structured mentorship, employment support, and spiritual guidance. Participants are empowered to build sustainable futures through a combination of practical training, emotional resilience, and faith-based support.
The program aligns with SVdP’s broader mission to combat poverty through systemic change. Grounded in Catholic Social Teaching, “Immersion” extends the Society’s reach by focusing on a demographic that accounts for nearly one-third of those it serves: individuals directly impacted by incarceration.
Pillars of the Program
The initiative is built on four main pillars, as described by Carlos Benitez, director of the St. Peter Claver Prison Ministry: employment, housing, personal and social wrap-around services, and spirituality. These components work together to address the multifaceted needs of returning citizens.
Employment is a critical focus, as a stable job is often the cornerstone of successful reintegration. Through partnerships with organizations like Promising People, participants gain access to innovative tools such as virtual reality and hands-on training for certifications in various industries. This collaboration provides pathways to higher-paying jobs and equips individuals with skills for long-term success.
“You cannot talk about paying a debt to society from a jail cell without windows, there is no humane punishment without a horizon. No one can see their life without a horizon. And so many times we are blocking the view of our inmates. Take this image of the windows and the horizon and insure that in your countries the prisons always have a window and a horizon….”
Pope Francis, To the participants in an international meeting for regional and national leaders of Prison Pastoral Care (November 8, 2019).
A Story of Redemption
The story of Damein Mitchell exemplifies the program’s transformative power. After spending nearly 20 years in and out of prison, Mitchell faced a pivotal moment in 2018 when he was presented with options for his children’s care following the death of their mother. Determined to reclaim his life and his role as a father, Mitchell committed himself to personal growth and spiritual renewal.
During his incarceration, he immersed himself in religious programs and participated in the St. Peter Claver Ministry’s “Passport to Success” program. This initiative prepared him for life outside prison by helping him create action-oriented plans for employment, housing, and compliance with legal requirements.
Upon his release in 2023, Mitchell joined Fresh Start, a year-long transitional housing program, and secured employment in construction. Through the Promising People partnership, he obtained additional certifications, launched his own LLC, and began managing his family’s rental properties. Today, he is pursuing a Construction Management degree and looks forward to reuniting with his children full-time.

Impact and Vision
Mitchell’s story is just one example of how “Immersion” transforms lives. By providing a supportive framework for returning citizens, SVdP not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term stability and community reintegration. The program’s focus on systemic change ensures its impact extends beyond individual participants, contributing to broader societal benefits like reduced recidivism and stronger communities.
