A historic ice storm swept across southeast Missouri on Sunday, January 5, 2025, leaving widespread destruction and disrupting daily life in Perryville. The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, a beloved religious and historic site, was among the locations significantly impacted.

“This is as bad as we’ve seen in decades,” declared Perryville’s city administrator, describing the storm’s unprecedented severity. Icy conditions led to widespread power outages, hazardous roads, and closures throughout the region, including the grounds and office of the National Shrine. A second storm followed on Friday, January 10, blanketing the area with an additional 5 inches of snow, further compounding the challenges.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, also known as Saint Mary’s of the Barrens, is a cherished Roman Catholic site that spans 55 peaceful acres. Founded in 1818, it features a historic church, a grotto, and a Rosary Walk. This sacred location, originally part of the Louisiana Purchase, boasts a storied history as the site of the first seminary west of the Mississippi River. Established through a land grant signed by John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the United States, the seminary played a pivotal role in forming Catholic clergy and serving early settlers.

The storm caused significant damage to the Shrine grounds, with falling trees cracking sidewalks and destroying structures beneath them. Early estimates of the repair costs stand at $100,000. Don Fulford, CEO of the Association of the Miraculous Medal (AMM), expressed gratitude for the safety of the Shrine’s staff and visitors, saying, “We are grateful to God for protecting our staff and visitors. We ask for Mary’s intercession as we clear debris and repair unsafe access in order to welcome visitors back to the National Shrine grounds.”

Despite the challenges, efforts to restore the site are well underway. The main parking lot and church entrance have been cleared, allowing Masses to resume at Saint Mary’s of the Barrens. The Visitor Center and Gift Shop have also reopened to the public.

The National Shrine is an important place for prayer, reflection, and learning, offering solace to those who visit. AMM is calling on members and supporters to pray for the community and assist in the recovery efforts. Contributions to help repair this historic haven of hope can be made through the Shrine’s official channels.
