Bhatteghari Drinking Water Project Handover Program

The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, through their Nepal Nazareth Society and Navjyoti Center, played a key role in addressing the critical needs of the Bhatteghari community, displaced by a landslide in 2008. This socially and economically disadvantaged group had struggled with the lack of clean drinking water and electricity for years. To alleviate these challenges, the Sisters facilitated the implementation of the Bhatteghari Water Supply System project in Barahatal Rural Municipality, Surkhet district, Karnali Province, Nepal, bringing much-needed relief and support to the community.

In November the completed project was officially handed over to the Barahatal Rural Municipality. Approximately 350 community members, including 200 women, attended the handover program. Key figures in attendance included Tej Bahadur Shahi, chairperson of the Drinking Water Consumer Committee; Gangaram Sunar, Chief of Surkhet District Coordination Committee; Sister Rosita Kavilpurayidathil of Nepal Nazareth Society; Ramesh Twayana of AEIN Luxembourg; and other local leaders, technical consultants, and stakeholders.

Program Highlights

The event featured local cultural performances by women’s groups and child clubs. The program began with a welcome speech by Ganesh Hamal, secretary of the Drinking Water Management Committee. The chief guest inaugurated the program by pouring water into a flower pot, symbolizing growth and prosperity. The water system was inaugurated by turning on the taps.

Engineer Ramesh Sapkota presented the project’s financial and progress report, followed by speeches from various guests who shared their best wishes and gratitude. Sister Rosita presented the handover certificate and documents to Prem Bahadur DC, Chief Administrative Officer of Barahatal Rural Municipality.

The rural municipality pledged to protect and promote the water project. Community members expressed their gratitude to the funding agencies and Nepal Nazareth Society, emphasizing their renewed commitment to develop the area into a flourishing valley with flowers, fruits, vegetables, and cash crops to support poverty alleviation and self-reliance.

Commitment to the Future

The community looks forward to leveraging the project for sustainable income generation and environmental conservation. With local government support, the residents aim to transform their valley into a model of resilience and prosperity.

This project represents a significant step toward improving living conditions and fostering self-reliance for the Bhatteghari community.
