Robert’s Story: the Path to Reintegration

Robert has been a regular user of our services for many years. A discreet man who rarely talks about his private life and never uses his real name, his story is one of resilience and the importance of patience and community support.

Originally from Slavonia, Robert lived for a long time in a family home with his wife and children. His life, however, took a turn when he separated from his wife and was forced to move out. In his search for work, he relocated to Rijeka, but failed to notice that his identity card had expired. Meanwhile, his ex-wife removed him from the address they had shared, which made Robert an addressless man—a requirement to obtain a new identity card.

Without a valid address, Robert faced the impossibility of renting a room that would allow him to regularize his situation. This chain of obstacles quickly pushed him onto the streets. He found shelter in an abandoned house near the city center, a dilapidated and unsafe place to live. In this environment, he began to rely on alcohol to cope with his situation.

Fortunately, when the day center, DePaul’s House of Refuge, opened its doors, Robert was convinced that he could spend his afternoons there instead of wandering the streets. Slowly, he started spending more time there, participating in activities and reading, which improved his communication with other users and staff. Despite his challenges, his social behavior improved significantly, and his alcohol consumption decreased.

Nevertheless, the inability to obtain a new identity card continued to be a barrier in his path to reintegration. Without the necessary documents, it was almost impossible for him to find accommodation or rebuild his life. Despite this obstacle, Robert did not give up. Over time, and with the constant support of the Depaul team, he finally obtained his identity card after more than ten years of struggle.

This achievement is a testament to the importance of perseverance and continuous support. Robert’s new steps toward a more stable life are a reminder that, even in the most difficult circumstances, hope should never be lost. Now, with his new ID, Robert has a renewed opportunity to fully reintegrate into society. His story is an example that, sometimes, the path to reintegration is slow and filled with challenges, but it is also full of opportunities for those who have the courage to move forward.
