A Vision for Renewal: Introducing Volume 38, Issue 1 of Vincentian Heritage Journal

In his 2013 apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis presented a transformative vision: “I want a Church which is poor and for the poor.” This profound statement underpins the theme of Volume 38, Issue 1 of the Vincentian Heritage Journal. Titled Becoming a Church of the Poor: The Vincentian Charism and Reform, this special issue reflects on the Church’s imperative to embrace both material simplicity and solidarity with the marginalized.

Edited by William T. Cavanaugh and Matthieu Brejon de Lavergnée, the volume emerges from a 2023 conference at DePaul University, where global representatives of the Vincentian Family gathered to discuss the Church’s mission in addressing systemic inequalities. The contributors, hailing from diverse regions, including Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, bring a rich tapestry of perspectives to this urgent conversation.

The articles delve into the Vincentian tradition’s historical and theological roots while confronting contemporary crises—pandemic, poverty, climate change, and more. Highlights include reflections on synodality, lay participation, and the evolving role of Vincentian institutions in empowering marginalized communities.

This issue offers more than theoretical discourse; it provides a roadmap for action, urging the Church to reform itself through humility and solidarity. By placing the poor at the heart of its mission, the Church can not only renew itself but also offer hope to a fractured world.
