Luka’s story: a Lesson in Solidarity and Perseverance

Luka dedicated his entire life to hard work, but an unexpected turn forever changed his destiny. An accident left him with a severe spinal injury, forcing him into early retirement. Shortly after, he lost his wife. In just a few months, his once-stable life completely fell apart. Isolated and overwhelmed by grief, he sought solace in alcohol, spiraling into a cycle of self-destruction.

Eventually, Luka decided to seek help and found support at the DePaul Croatia Refuge House, a center dedicated to assisting people in vulnerable situations. There, he began to rebuild his life. With the consistent care provided by the team, his physical and emotional health started to improve. Life, however, dealt him another harsh blow: a second spinal injury left him incapacitated. When he stopped attending the center, the staff grew concerned. Upon searching for him, they discovered him in dire conditions: alone, semi-paralyzed, living in a small, dilapidated room without electricity or running water. Luka lay immobile amidst trash and waste, in a state of complete abandonment.

Faced with this heartbreaking situation, the team at the DePaul Croatia Refuge House redoubled their efforts to help him. Despite several medical institutions refusing to admit him, the staff refused to give up. They brought him food, cared for him in his room, and worked closely with his doctor and various social organizations to find a permanent solution. Their dedication and persistence eventually paid off: Luka was admitted to a care home for the elderly, where he now lives surrounded by proper care and in a dignified environment.

Luka’s story is a powerful reminder that no one should face hardship alone. In the darkest moments, solidarity can make the difference between despair and hope. Thanks to the intervention of the DePaul Croatia Refuge House, Luka found a new chance to live with dignity and peace.
