Jamuna, 29, is a single mother living with her 5-year-old daughter. Her life took a dark turn after her marriage in 2014 when family hardships and abuse left her struggling for survival. Her husband’s behavior became abusive, leading to physical and financial neglect.
With immense challenges, Jamuna had no income and relied on collecting and selling spinach and wild fruits. She left her daughter with neighbors while she worked, feeling helpless as her child often cried from hunger.
One day, while crying on the roadside, she met a woman from the “Women at the Margins” organization. She brought her to Navjyoti Center, Surkhet, where she met Sister Rosita Kavilpurayidathil. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth provided her with legal support, food, clothes, and educational materials for her daughter. She attended legal awareness training and sessions on minimizing violence and regaining her inner strength.
Jamuna registered her case in the district court. Despite her husband’s attempts to hide assets, she received a divorce and financial support for her daughter.
With the help she received from Sister Rosita and Navjyoti Center, she trained in auto-rickshaw driving. She invested in an auto rickshaw with a loan and her savings, earning a good daily wage. She repays her loan while saving money in the Navjyoti Cooperative.
Jamuna expresses gratitude to the Navjyoti Center and to Sister Rosita for providing justice and teaching her to live a dignified life. She hopes no one else has to suffer injustice and wishes Navjyoti the best in their work.
Programs like those offered by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth at Navjyoti Center in Nepal, are crucial for women facing abuse and hardship. They provide essential support, including legal assistance, vocational training, and basic necessities, empowering women to regain control over their lives. By offering a pathway to self-sufficiency and dignity, these programs help break the cycle of violence and poverty, ensuring women like Jamuna can build a better future for themselves and their children.
