SSVP Applauds Ceasefire on Syria

by | Sep 16, 2016 | Disasters and Responses, News, Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The International General Council (CGI) of Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) supports and affirms the US-Russia led ceasefire in Syria which will allow humanitarian aid to reach Syrian cities under siege by various forces and groups.

Even the unplanned timing is symbolical, happening on the day of the celebration of Eid-al-Adha, the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice, which commemorates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son for God. The SSVP believes that this is a small but important step in reducing the suffering of all Syrians by which hundreds of thousands have already died and millions more made homeless and are refugees to other countries.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Syria:

In Aleppo, Damas and Hassake, the SSVP is very active in providing emergency aid for the people affected by the war: distribution of food supplies, clothing, and medicines. They also provide developmental programs and projects like educational support, professional trainings, and many others.

Having been a partner in this great humanitarian effort for many years, the political situation and war has greatly affected the Society which has hundreds of members in Syria. Bombings and other violent activities exposes our members to great risk, them being victims and casualties too. But despite of the dangers of aiding to the needs of the people, a lot of volunteers still decides to stay and continue risking their lives to help others. Truly, nothing beats the heart of a volunteer.

In the spirit of the SSVP Founders who envisioned a world that is embraced by a network of Charity, the Society prays in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord that peace, justice, truth and love may prevail in the hearts of everyone.

May God’s healing hands be upon the people of Syria.

Renato Lima de Oliveira
16th General President
On behalf of the Board
