missionary catechists_enArchbishop Francis Beckmann, C.M., (1883-1963), was the 3rd archbishop of Panama. He promoted catechetical formation by organizing the First Catechetical Congress and by creating the School of Catechists. He always insisted upon the teaching of catechism as the basis of Christian formation.

On November 27, 1947, Bishop Beckmann decided to found a religious community called “Pious Union of Catechists Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal”. Today the Community of Sisters Catechists, as it is generally called, is a diocesan institute for catechetical and pastoral work in the Vincentian tradition.

They are present in the city of Panama (urban area), in Capira (semi-rural area), in Las Palmas de Veraguas (rural area). They serve the Panamanian Church through Christian formation of children, youth and adults. They work in pre-school, primary and secondary education. They collaborate with parishes in pastoral groups of varied social and economic status.

Their rule is based on that of the Daughters of Charity. Vincent de Paul is a patron of this diocesan institute and the Miraculous Medal is a part of their habit.

The Community slogan is: “All to Jesus through Mary”
