The Brothers of Charity, founded by the Belgian St. Vincent, are reporting on massacres in Burundi. At least 36 people were killed on September 18th after unknown gunmen opened fire at a crowded bar in Gatumba, a border town about 15 km west of the Burundian capital Bujumbura, where the Brothers of Charity run a psychiatric centre. It was one of the sporadic attacks that occurred in the country after Burundi’s last rebel group officially laid down its arms in 2009. After this and similar traumatic events, the adequate post-traumatic stress disorder treatments offered at this psychiatric centre seem to be of utmost importance for the population’s mental health.
