The Visitor of Madagascar has sent us some alarming news of the social and political situation in that country. There is no civil war but uprisings, clashes, abductions, dynamiting of public edifices, practices like that of terrorists and extremists take place almost daily on the island. Barricades limit the free circulation of people and products, paralyzing the country. The few people who work in factories have been laid off. The poor are once again the victims of these barbaric acts. Thousands of people are without resources. The hospitals no longer obtain fresh supplies of medicines.

The Church has involved itself in the defense of the poor and has already paid with blood for this position (murder of a missionary). A compromise has just been signed between the new president and the outgoing president.

Let us pray that social peace may be quickly reestablished.
