Grow up and Get Ready for the Life to Come

Jesus embodies the way to grow up and get ready for the life to come. Following him, we will get to the place that he readies for us and we will be where he is.

Just before going up to heaven, Jesus does for his followers what he has already done for two of them. For those who were on their way to Emmaus. That is, he opens their eyes, their minds, to understand the Scriptures about his death, passion and resurrection. Such understanding surely makes them grow in knowledge of him.

And we followers of Jesus today must also have this understanding and this knowledge. For otherwise, we can be neither witnesses of the Paschal Mystery nor preachers of repentance and the forgiveness of sins.

Moreover, today’s true disciples keep growing. And they do not grow only in one way but in different ways. For one thing, though Jesus is now out of sight, to them, however, he is still not out of mind. In other words, they so grow that they do not only grasp through bodily senses. They are able to rise above them through faith.

For another thing, just like yesterday, the followers of Jesus today prove themselves by not staying put in one place. For they eventually receive the promise of the Father, the Spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of Jesus. Clothed thus with the power from on high, they outgrow their fear of what lies outside their shells (see SV.EN XII:81). This means that they grow out of their ethnocentrism, exclusivism, separatism, clericalism, to reach to out others, to those in the outskirts.

And, finally, those who follow Jesus are wholly true when they, too, love to the end. When they give their bodies up and shed their blood for others. This is to say that they “grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ” (Ephes 4, 15). They become blessings themselves. They, then, are ready also to be with Jesus.

Lord Jesus, may we grow up praising God always. And make us praise him not with our lips and voices only, but also with our minds, lives and actions (St. Augustine).

Crecer y preparar para la vida futura

Jesús es la forma en persona de crecer y preparar para la vida futura. Si a Jesús nos conformamos llegaremos al lugar que él nos prepara y estaremos donde está.

Poco antes de subir al cielo, Jesús hace con los discípulos lo que ya ha hecho con dos de elllos. Con los de camino a Emaús. Es decir, les abre los ojos, la inteligencia, para que comprendan las Escrituras. Así logran seguramente crecer en el conocimiento de él.

Y los seguidores de Jesús hoy día debemos tener tal comprensión y tal conocimiento. Pues de lo contrario, no podremos ser ni testigos del Misterio Pascual ni predicadores de la conversión y el perdón de pecados.

Los discípulos de hoy no dejan, además, de crecer. Y no solo crecen de una manera, sino de diferentes maneras. En primer lugar, sus ojos no ven a Jesús ahora, ya que una nube se lo ha quitado de la vista humana. Pero no por esto ya no lo sienten los corazones de los discípulos. En otras palabras, llegan a crecer ellos de tal forma que no solo perciben con los sentidos corporales. Son capaces ellos de sobrepasarlos por la fe.

En segundo lugar, los seguidores de Jesús se acreditan hoy, como ayer, por no quedar plantados en un puesto solo. Pues a tiempo debido, reciben el Espíritu de sabiduría y revelación para conocer a Jesús. Revestidos así de la fuerza de lo alto, superan el miedo de lo que se enucentra fuera de sus conchas (véase SV.ES XI:397). Esta forma de crecer consiste en salir ellos del etnocentrismo, exclusivismo, separatismo, clericalismo. Así se hacen solidarios con los forasteros, con los que viven en las periferias.

Y, finalmente, los que siguen a Jesús se manifiestan totalmente fieles cuando aman también hasta el extremo. Cuando entregan el cuerpo y derraman la sangre por los demás. Esto es decir que consiguen crecer hasta «hasta alcanzar del todo al que es la cabeza, a Cristo» (Efes 4, 15). Se convierte en bendiciones. Así pues, están preparados para estar con Jesús.

Señor Jesús, concédenos crecer bendiciendo siempre a Dios. Y haz que lo bendigamos no solo con nuestra lengua y nuestra voz, sino también con nuestro interior, nuestra vida, nuestras acciones (san Agustín).
