very important info...thanks so much for including all the sites to check on. Sister Louise deserves our love and support in her very difficult situation- Note that it is said the Bishop met with her individually. He did not.

For those who do not know the term ANAWIM used in the letter here is a quick explanation:

ANAWIM (pronounced 'on-a-veem' or 'An-a veem' ) is Hebrew word (in plural) which could be translated as 'poor', 'afflicted', 'humble' or 'meek'. Anawim are the "faithful remnants" who, even in the worst of times find their security in the Creator. Indeed, the Anawim are all of us!

In the same spirit I would recommend <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Framework-Understanding-Poverty-Ruby-Payne/dp/1929229488" rel="nofollow">"A Framework for Understanding Poverty"</a> by Ruby Payne a leading expert on the Mindsets of people in poverty, the middle class and wealth.
I found it an eye opening insight into how different are the mental worlds of each group and consequently how they can use the same words with different meaning and the values they attach to friends, work, possessions, etc.
In effect she speels out the unwwritten codes of conduct clearly understood by everyone in a particular strata but not understood by those outside.

Aidan Rooney makes the point near the end of this terrific video that the rules of the game need to be changed - that the deck is currently stacked against the poor. As just one small illustration of the truth of that observation, read some of the examples in this excerpt from Barbara Ehrenreich's new book, "This Land is Their Land," such as the fact that the poor pay more for things like car insurance and groceries. The link to the excerpt is here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91846823

An interesting note: The "Alchemy World" projects in Ethiopia listed on this website have a Vincentian connections.
Here is another finding worth thinking about in the context of attempts to address the digital divide: The New York Times reported earlier this month of a survey of families in Romania who had been given vouchers for the purchase of computers for their children. "It turns out that kids in households lucky enough to get computer vouchers spent a lot less time watching TV — but that’s where the good news ends. 'Vouchered' kids also spent less time doing homework, got lower grades and reported lower educational aspirations than the 'unvouchered' kids." The article went on to suggest that "If we really want to help poor kids, ...we may want to focus on approaches that provide structured, supervised access through after-school programs or subsidies that bring technology into low-income schools. But just giving kids computers? Might as well just ship them PlayStations." (The NYT article is here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/15/weekinreview/15read.html?_r=1&oref=slogin.)

Predatory lending is also a big problem in the United States, often targeting the elderly. As explained by Ann Goldweber, director of the elder law clinic at St. John's University Law School, "[l]enders target elderly people because they usually own their own homes free and clear of any encumbrance. Elderly women living alone are singled out because many of them did not handle the household's finances and may not be sophisticated in financial matters." Through the clinic, part of the Law School's commitment to its Vincentian mission, Ann and her students do great work in representing a number of elderly who have been scammed by predatory lenders. Read more about the clinic here: http://www.stjohns.edu/academics/graduate/law/academics/Elder.

A correction from Charley Harvey: The mattress recycling operation is NOT run by the local Oakland, CA SVDP as indicated. It is instead run by SVDP of Lane County Oregon under the name DR3 as to not confuse the two seperate SVDP operations. As such, the director quoted is NOT the local director, but the director of SVDP Lane County Oregon. (This correction has been made in the above text. Apologies for the error and thank you for drawing attention to the error.)

Sr.Loretta, This is a blast from the past. We met in Utica NY in the 70's. I have wondered about you and your work. I still have a great love for art and remember the wonderful Muson Proctor where we met as students. Stella and Truman and the Modern art class. I viewed your sculptor and it is just so beautiful and moving. I have some of your works still hanging in my home. Please make an effort to contact me and catch up. I think of you so often with fondness. Mary Lou Wilkins
