The recycling program at Escanaba (Michigan) St. Vincent de Paul earned the organizational Recycler of the Year while George Semmens, Escanaba, was named individual Recycler of the Year.

The Vincent de Paul Society will join with 18 other Catholic organizations at the annual Catholic Social Ministry Gathering in Washington February 19-22, 2009. SVdP Voice of the Poor representatives have attended the gathering for the past five years.

Fr. Dennis Holtschneider, CM, challenged to Society to develop it’s Voice of the poor initiative in his keynote address to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He further pledged to commit resources to help in the development of such initiatives.

In his Angelus address on Sept. 28 Benedict said “I express appreciation for the “Making Me Study is Good for Everyone” campaign of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In the spirit of St. Vincent, whom we celebrated in yesterday’s liturgy, this initiative is proposed to prevent the poverty of illiteracy.”
