Pakistan Bishop says North-South Imbalance a Cause of terroism
ISLAMABAD, Oct 3, 01 (FIDES/CWNews.com) – A Pakistani
bishop working closely with refugees from Afghanistan has
argued that in order to eliminate terrorism, world leaders
should work to achieve “equal distribution of wealth
between North and South.”
Bishop Joseph Coutts of Faisalabad told the Fides news
agency, “Terrorism is the result of anger and desperation
which arise when people are unable to attain their goals in
a legal way, or feel that no one is listening to their
demands.” When asked to identify a reason for the September
11 attack on the United States, the bishops said: “I think
that the world’s North-South imbalance was the main cause.”
Bishop Coutts said that Catholic charitable agencies are
working feverishly to help the tens of thousands of
refugees leaving Afghanistan. He said that these Catholic
charities would be endangered by any American attack on
Afghanistan. “In Pakistan Christians are easily identified
with the Western powers and the US,” he explained.
“Therefore Muslims after any injustice from the Western
World vent their anger on Christians of the country.”
