Pope ask University Students to Engage in Constructive criticism of Globalizatio

VATICAN, Apr. 9. 01 (CWNews.com) ñ Speaking to a conference of
university students in the Paul VI auditorium on Monday, Pope John
Paul II said that Christians must not only engage in constructive
criticism of the process of globalization, but also take action to ensure
that human dignity is upheld.

The Pope made his remarks to students brought together in Rome
this week by Univ, an annual conference for university students
organized during Holy Week by Opus Dei. The theme of this yearís
meeting was “the human face for a global world.”

In his remarks to the young people, Pope John Paul urged them to be
on guard against “a process of disinformation that endangers
personal freedoms and cultural identities.” He placed special
importance on the spiritual principles that can be lost “in a society
that is more and more characterized by the phenomenon of
globalization.”

Economic concerns alone cannot be allowed to dictate major changes
in society, the Pontiff said. While it is natural and right to provide for
peopleís material needs, he continued, spiritual needs must also be
met. “The true must prevail over the useful, the good over comfort,
freedom over fashion, and the person over structure,” the Pope
insisted.

“On the other hand,” the Holy Father observed, “it is not enough to be
critical; we need to do moreóto be builders as well.” And to do that,
he said, Christians must begin by strengthening their own spiritual
lives.
