Jail Record for Aborigines

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD (Friday April 6, 2001): An article by Linda Doherty indicates that the high percentage of Aborigines in New South Wales jails could be halved if prison terms of less than six months were abolished, according to the State’s bureau of crime research. A report from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research has revealed that Aborigines are over-represented at every stage of the legal system, from the time of arrest, to incarceration in police custody, court appearances and convictions.
